I would be so sure Windows die-hards won't buy Apple laptops. They are by far the most attractive devices on the market and always were. I have quite some Apple die-hards in my IT department buying a Mac now iSight is supported in Windows.

Don't count on the low price advantage of other manufactorers. Apple has beaten Dell in a high end desktop by 25% of the price. I don't see no reason why they can't do this in low end ... if they want to.

I don't see why a person who doesn't want to ever leave Windows would buy a Mac. If Windows is still their *primary OS*, that would be a bit odd. And Apple will provide the necessary drivers, support BootCamp, but I don't think they will support Microsoft's OS.

The large scale hardware manufacturers are mostly selling low cost PCs, 50% of Acer notebooks in U.S. retail in the second half of last year were sold for $500-$750, for instance, Compaq and Gateway are in the same ballpark. Apple won't compete here. Instead they'll try to steal the lunch of Toshiba, Sony, if enough people are OK to switch, with a little help from BootCamp, Parallel or VMware. I think Apple will be mosty interested in revenue share, instead of unit share. Shipments will increase, but there is still no entry-level tower and the MacBook starts at $1,000. Whatever happens they won't go apeshit on market share. :-)
